Far more than a book publisher, Island Press helps create better environmental policy by assembling programs and conducting national educational outreach so that the information and ideas in each of our books reaches decision-makers in government, business, and other sectors; practitioners working in conservation; students; and the public.
Outreach
- Science and Environment Resource Center - Aims to improve environmental science and policy by connecting great thinkers and their ideas with government, business, and advocacy audiences and the media.
- Eco-Compass - Island Press's community blog, where we invite the community to participate in discussion of important environmental issues.
- Author Events - Island Press authors speak at events across the country. Most events are free and open to the public.
- Island Press Readers - Compendiums of chapters from some of our most important and popular titles on a single subject.
- Partnerships and Affiliate Programs - Offers ways we can partner with others who share a commitment to the environment, such as developing publication series and offering benefits to organizations with memberships.
Programs
- Climate Adaptation Knowledge Exchange - An innovative effort to create a community of practice on climate change adaptation.
- Western Conservation Finance Boot Camp at Stanford University - The Western Conservation Finance Boot Camp will provide the most up-to-date innovative and successful tools available for conservationists. The week long training program will also focus on finding new sources of funding that are needed for land conservation during a recession.
- Workshops and Conferences - Collaborative initiatives that advance understanding of particular environmental issues.
- Sustainability and Historic Preservation Thought Leader Discussion Series - A series of panel discussions sponsored by the U.S. Green Building Council, Island Press and the Trust for Architectural Easements will bring together experts from the financial, real estate, architecture, preservation, planning, and policy worlds to provide theories, best practices, and examples to create a future that is environmentally, financially, and socially sound.
- Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) - Aims to sustainably preserve ecosystem services for future generations by offering a scientific basis for action, with a set of solutions and policy recommendations.
- Colorado River Basin Assessment - Based on the MA methodology, presents four unique scenarios of what the Colorado River Basin might look like in the future given current trends, pressures, and policy options.
