Our publishing program develops, publishes, markets, and distributes original, empowering books in conjunction with other environmental organizations, academic institutions, and government agencies. Each editorial decision we make is based on extensive market research that reveals an unmet need in such areas as ecosystem management, land-use planning and sustainable communities, and environmental policy.

Island Press editorial staff interacts regularly with the education and environmental community—scientists, environmentalists, professionals, public officials, community leaders, instructors, students, and concerned citizens—to assess what information they need to better carry out their efforts to protect the environment. Our editors also attend academic, scientific, and professional association conferences and formally survey Island Press book buyers for market research. We use the feedback to 1.) develop the content and format of our books, and 2.) continually refine the various elements of our overall publishing program, from the composition of the annual new title list to the design our marketing strategies.
