Carl Elefante

If you don’t recognize Carl Elefante’s name, you may recognize his widely used quote “the greenest building is one that is already built”, from a 2007 article he wrote while working as an architect at Quinn-Evans in DC. Jen brought me in on a meeting with Carl two years ago, after he served a term as president of AIA (American Institute of Architects). Carl has been instrumental in getting AIA to formerly address climate change (with the help of IP board member Marsha Maytum and author Lance Hosey). Carl is Principal Emeritus at Quinn Evans Architects in DC. He served as AIA President in 2018. He is Adjunct Professor at The Catholic University.

Stewardship of the Built Environment

Sustainability, Preservation, and Reuse

When we think of green building, we tend to picture new construction. But Robert A. Young argues that the greenest building is often the one that has already been built. In Stewardship of the Built Environment, he shows how rehabilitating and reusing existing structures holds untapped potential for achieving sustainable communities.
